Manglik dosha, also called Mangal dosha or Kuja dosha, is a traditional reading of where Mars sits in a person’s birth chart. A chart is commonly called Manglik when Mars is in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house counted from the Lagna (ascendant). Some traditions also check these houses from the Moon and from Venus, and some include the 2nd house. In matchmaking, families usually prefer to match a Manglik boy or girl with a Manglik partner. Astrologers also recognise cancellation rules, and these differ from one pandit to another. Being Manglik is not unusual, and it is something to understand calmly before any proposal goes ahead.

Which houses make a chart Manglik?

The commonly cited houses are counted from the Lagna, the sign rising at the time of birth.

  • 1st house: the self and personality
  • 4th house: home and domestic life
  • 7th house: marriage and partnership
  • 8th house: shared resources and sudden changes
  • 12th house: expenses and the comforts of married life

Some astrologers add the 2nd house, which relates to family and speech. Others count the same houses from the Moon sign and from Venus as well as from the Lagna. When a pandit checks from all three points, more charts come out as Manglik than when he checks from the Lagna alone. So if two pandits give you different answers, ask each one which method he used.

Why does the birth time matter so much?

The Lagna changes roughly every two hours, so the exact time of birth decides which house Mars falls in. A difference of even a short while can move Mars from one house to the next and change the Manglik reading. Families should confirm the time from a birth certificate or hospital record where possible, and use the same details for every reading. If the recorded time is only approximate, tell your pandit, so he can keep that in mind when he reads the chart. Our page on kundli matching lists the details we ask for.

Why do families match Manglik with Manglik?

Traditional practice holds that when both charts are Manglik, the effect of Mars on each side is balanced by the other. For this reason, many families with a Manglik son or daughter look only at Manglik proposals, and many families with a non-Manglik child prefer to avoid a Manglik match.

This narrows the pool of proposals a little. Since five of the twelve houses are checked, a good number of charts come out Manglik in at least one method of reading. What helps most is knowing your child’s Manglik status before proposals start coming in. A family that learns about it after the first meeting often feels unsettled, and that can be avoided.

What are Manglik cancellation rules?

Astrologers recognise a number of situations in which Manglik dosha is considered cancelled or weakened. Examples that are often mentioned include both charts being Manglik, or Mars sitting in its own sign or its sign of exaltation. Some pandits also give weight to the position of Jupiter or to other planets in the chart.

These rules are not uniform. One astrologer may treat a chart as fully Manglik while another reads the same chart as cancelled. Neither is being careless; they follow different schools of practice. The sensible course is to let your own family pandit, whose method your family already trusts, read both charts and give you his view.

Is being Manglik something to worry about?

We would encourage families to treat Manglik status as a piece of information about a match, in the same way as the Guna Milan score. It is part of a traditional system that many families value, and it deserves respect. It is also only one consideration among many.

Manglik sons and daughters marry every year, both to Manglik partners and, where their pandit approves, to non-Manglik partners. A calm approach works better than a fearful one. Find out the status early, share it honestly with the other family, and decide together with your pandit. If you want to see how Manglik fits into the wider kundli check, our article on what a good Guna Milan score is explains the 36-point system.

Should a family share Manglik status upfront?

Yes. Sharing it at the start saves both families time and avoids awkwardness later. A biodata that mentions Manglik status clearly lets the other side decide early whether to proceed. It also shows openness, which families on both sides appreciate. Hiding it, or leaving it vague, usually creates a harder conversation once kundlis are exchanged.

In the biodata, a simple line such as “Manglik: Yes” or “Manglik: No” is enough. If your pandit has found the dosha cancelled in your child’s chart, you can write “Manglik (cancelled as per our pandit)” and keep the kundli ready to share. The other family’s pandit may read it differently, and that is fine. It is far easier to learn that early than after the families have met.

How we handle this at Pavitra Rishta

Every proposal is kundli matched before it reaches your family, with the Guna Milan score out of 36 and a Manglik check on both sides. Your Relationship Manager knows from the first meeting whether your family wants only Manglik proposals, is open to a non-Manglik match with your pandit’s approval, or does not follow kundli at all. Details are shared with another family only with your permission (see how it works).

If your son or daughter is Manglik and you would like to talk through what that means for the search, call us on +91 93303 22220 or schedule a call through our contact page. We will listen first and explain how we would approach your search.

Questions families ask

How do I know if my son or daughter is Manglik?

A pandit or a kundli made from the exact date, time and place of birth will show where Mars sits. If Mars is in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the Lagna, the chart is commonly called Manglik. Some astrologers also check from the Moon and Venus, or include the 2nd house, so ask which method was used.

Can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik?

Many families prefer to match a Manglik with a Manglik, because traditional practice holds that the dosha is balanced when both charts have it. Some astrologers will approve a Manglik and non-Manglik match when cancellation rules apply to the chart. These rules vary between astrologers, so the decision is best taken with your own family pandit after he has read both charts.

Is Manglik dosha cancelled after a certain age?

Families often hear that Manglik dosha weakens after a certain age. This is a belief held in some traditions and not a rule every astrologer accepts. If it matters to your family, ask your pandit how he reads it. Do not rely on a general rule you have heard, because practice differs from one pandit to another.

Is a Manglik match checked separately from the Guna Milan score?

Yes. The Guna Milan score out of 36 comes from eight kootas, and Manglik status is not one of them. A couple can have a high score and still have a Manglik mismatch, or a modest score with both sides Manglik. That is why families usually look at the score and the Manglik check together before going ahead.
